What is dry needling?

Evidence-based.
Clinically proven.

Dry needling is a skilled, evidence-based treatment technique used by licensed healthcare professionals to address a wide range of neuromuscular and movement-related conditions. It involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific areas of the body — muscles, connective tissue, or near nerves — to stimulate a targeted healing response.

While often used to release muscle tension and inactivate trigger points, dry needling goes far beyond that — improving motor control, reducing inflammation, modulating the nervous system, and accelerating recovery from injury.

Dry needling vs. acupuncture

While both use thin monofilament needles, dry needling is grounded in Western medicine — targeting neuromuscular dysfunctions, pain patterns, and movement impairments. Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine focused on energy meridians. The goals, rationale, and techniques are distinct.

Reduces muscle pain and tension
Improves joint mobility and range of motion
Enhances circulation and tissue healing
Modulates the nervous system and pain response
Inactivates trigger points and muscle spasms
Improves motor control and movement quality
Reduces central sensitization in chronic pain
Accelerates recovery from injury

Frequently asked questions

Common questions.

How does dry needling work?
Dry needling stimulates sensory receptors in muscle and connective tissue, triggering a local and central nervous system response. This includes modulation of pain through spinal reflexes, release of endogenous opioids, and improved motor control via changes in neuromuscular function. It can also help reduce central sensitization in chronic pain conditions.
Does dry needling hurt?
You may feel a brief twitch, dull ache, or pressure during treatment. Some areas are more sensitive than others, but most clients tolerate it well. Mild soreness or fatigue afterward is normal and typically subsides within 24–48 hours.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained and licensed professional. Needles are sterile, single-use, and applied using evidence-based safety protocols. Your health history is reviewed prior to treatment to minimize risk and ensure proper technique.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition, goals, and how your body responds. Some people feel significant improvement after one session, while others benefit most from a short series. We recommend starting with at least 3 sessions for sustained results — which is why the 3-session package is our most popular starting point.
What should I expect after a session?
Some muscle soreness is common — similar to post-exercise discomfort. You may also notice tightness relief, increased range of motion, or mild fatigue. Hydration, gentle movement, and rest help speed recovery. Most clients feel therapeutic effects within 24–72 hours.
Can anyone get dry needling?
Dry needling is safe for most adults. There are some precautions for people with certain conditions such as bleeding disorders or active infections. Email support@formulaihw.com if you have questions about your eligibility prior to booking.
